PROJECT

Effective Classroom Presentation for
Secondary School Students and Teachers in the Pacific

An effective classroom presentation skills OER is proposed for secondary school students and teachers in the Pacific in the first phase with opportunities to scale this for mature audience and students and teachers beyond the Pacific. It has been observed and recorded in literature that the social and environmental factors instills the culture of silence in students in the Pacific and they do not speak out as a sign of respect. However, this results in students not articulating their difficulties or brilliance in their school settings and results in many missed opportunities. Students have to make important choices for their career path at secondary school level and therefore presentation skills are very important. The developer believes that the proposed OER will assist the students to acquire effective presentation skills and at the same time provide effective presentation skills strategies that the teachers can use in the classroom to educate their students.

An interactive learning management system based OER would be created which would have six modules. The teachers and students would be grouped separately according to their login choice as a teacher or student and conditional formatting would be done to separate specific activities for the students and the teachers. The OER would be made interactive using videos, gamification of activities, trivia quizzes on presentation skills and collection of tokens for activity completion, which will be displayed in the OER completion certificate. The use of game based learning is envisaged to capture the student interests to complete the OER and provide examples to teachers to make their classes more engaging. Furthermore, the OER would be developed using localized examples for the Pacific students so that they would be able to relate to the concepts better.

The OER will guide the students and teachers to build a captivating presentation from their presentation topic in six modules. The modules will cover the following topics:
Module 1: How to Develop an Idea into a Presentation
Module 2: The Important Steps to Build an Effective Presentation
Module 3: Structuring your Presentation
Module 4: Using Visual Aids in Presentations
Module 5: Engaging your Audience
Module 6: Concluding Tips

Each module will comprise of a video lecture with activities within the videos, interactive game based activities on the sub-topic, trivia quizzes and self-test questions. Completing all the components of the module and passing the self-test question will open the next module while failing the self-test will take the users to the further examples and re-test section. A completion bar indicating the completion percentage would also be present. Thus with the six modules, the OER would be provide the effective presentation skills so that students can present their ideas better.
