EN-LITE Society for strengthening energy literacy
Energy, Society and Open Education

The presentation focuses primarily on the ambitions of our SDG7 Hub with some information also about the past activities of the EN-LITE Society for strengthening energy literacy (Slovenia) and the concept of Energy Literacy in general.

The SDG7 Hub of the OE4BW mentoring program was launched to support the achievement of the UN SDG7 (Sustainable Development Goal Nr. 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy) through open educational practices for strengthening energy literacy.

The SDG7 Hub members are developing Open Educational Resources (OER), e.g. open courses, open interactive presentations and videos and other formats of open content, dealing with energy and climate issues. The OER developers and their mentors have diverse backgrounds in natural science, engineering and social science, and they represent several educational, research and industrial (energy sector) organisations from the following countries: Bangladesh, Belgium, India, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Sweden, the UK and the USA.

The mentors, involved in the SDG7 Hub projects, are renowned Open Education experts from the following organisations: MIT Climate and MIT Open Learning, ICDE – International Council for Open and Distance Education, TU Delft, Arizona State University, Jožef Stefan Institute, EIT InnoEnergy, Creative Commons, Loughborough University – Institute of Digital Technologies and Bangladesh Open University.

The SDG7 Hub is co-coordinated by Jennryn Wetzler (Assistant Director of Open Education at Creative Commons, USA) in Mojca Drevenšek (energy communications consultant at Consensus Communications and president of the EN-LITE Society, Slovenia). The energy data partner of the SDG7 Hub is the Republic of Slovenia Statistical Office (SURS). The online collaboration environment for the SDG7 Hub operations is powered by MiTeam (Media Interactive, Slovenia).

The presentation consists of three parts:

  • The first part introduces the concept of energy literacy and explains its importance,
  • The second part presents the past activities for strengthening energy literacy and
  • The third part presents the future ambitions to develop a global open knowledge platform to support the achievement of the SDG7 – affordable and clean energy.

The production of the Energy, Society and Open Education interactive e-book presentation was co-funded through the U.S. Embassy Small Grants Program. The presentation includes text, graphics, video content and audio narration, and is CC BY licensed.

The results of the OE4BW SDG7 Hub will be presented at the end of June this year as part of the OE4BW 2019/2020 final event.
